Sun& – Say Good Morning with Mimosas and Bubbles

by January 2, 2016

Sun & could not be any more different than Barrel 12, the bar it sits directly opposite from in Palm Views East. While Barrel 12 has a distinctly blokey feel, Sun&, with its whitewash tables, floor tiles and orange trees, its drink menu emphasizing cocktails and sparkling wines, is distinctly more girly. It even does a champaigne breakfast on the weekends with”early risers” being rewarded with mimosas for AED 30 or a whole bottle of house sparkling for AED 150.

Sun&2
This is not to say only girls like sparkling, or that boys cannot like white washed wooden flooring, but you can see these two bars are polar opposites in more than which way they face. The bar itself describes itself as Mediterranean themed, which you can see in the menu with olive bread, empanadas, polenta or patatas bravas, anchovies, and scallops in its grazing menu, or paella, mussels, Osso buco, sardines, octopus… in its mains.

Sun&4
The food and drinks menus actually pretty extensive, and the food, while not cheap, serves up portions that can only be described as generous. See both menus here.

Most of the day Sun& offers a pretty relaxed vibe. We’re not sure how long it will last but the whole of Palm Views seems to have open and free wi-fi. so it also makes a great spot in the early afternoon when it is less busy to do some work away from work. That is if the view is not completely distracting.

The bar has a fantastic location overlooking the Marina, water and the villas on one of the fronds (you do worry about the houses directly opposite – they are less than 100 meters away).  At night, on the weekend, it can get very, very busy. However, during the week – day or night – Sun& can feel very empty – not necessarily a bad thing unless you’re looking for energy. If you are, make sure you bring it with you.

Sun&’s daily happy hour runs from 5PM to 8PM with sharing buckets, bottles and pitchers for AED 100. It also has a sunset brunch from 5 PM and 8 PM every Friday with a 6 course tasting menu and 3 house beverages for AED 202. There is also a live DJ “to kickstart your evening”.

One thing we would love Nakheel to do is to improve access to the bar. It is not an exaggeration to say anyone who wants to visit has to take their life in their hands traversing the lack of pavements to get there. Once they do arrive at Palm Views, the entrance is dirty and feels like you are entering into a seedy bar at the back end of Deira – almost the opposite we assume of what this bar is trying to be and to project.

Overall however this is a great new bar from Nakheel and for the Palm. Let’s hope it can sort out and clean up the access roads – before someone gets hurt.
